Uri relocation checklist
Altdorf • German • Updated August 2026
Uri is one of the founding cantons of the Swiss Confederation (1291) and the southern gateway to the Gotthard. With about 37,000 residents it is one of the smaller cantons by population, German-speaking, and entirely alpine — the Reuss valley runs the length of the canton from the lake at Flüelen up to the Gotthard pass. Altdorf is the capital, famous for its Wilhelm Tell statue and the long-running Tell open-air theatre. The economy combines a small industrial base (Dätwyler in Altdorf is the best-known name), Gotthard-corridor transit infrastructure (the world's longest rail tunnel runs under the canton), and alpine tourism around Andermatt — which has been transformed over the last decade by the Andermatt-Sedrun Sport mega-development and the merger of its ski areas.
