Zurich relocation checklist
Zürich • German • Updated August 2026
Zurich is Switzerland's economic engine — the largest canton by population and the country's financial, tech and insurance hub. UBS, Swiss Re, Google's largest engineering office outside the United States and the SIX exchange all sit within the canton, and roughly a third of residents hold a foreign passport. The city's tax burden is middle-of-the-pack for Switzerland, but lakeside 'Gold Coast' communes (Küsnacht, Erlenbach, Zollikon) bring it down sharply for higher earners. The real shock for newcomers is the rental market: the city's vacancy rate has sat below 0.1% for years.

First 90 days in Zurich
- Build your rental dossier before you land: Betreibungsauszug (order from your previous commune or wait until first registration), three payslips, employer reference, permit copy, photo, one-paragraph motivation letter
- Register at your local Einwohnerkontrolle within 14 days — Stadt Zürich uses online appointments through stadt-zuerich.ch/persoenliches
- Apply for your B / L / G permit at the Migrationsamt Zürich
- Pick a health insurer within 3 months (compare on priminfo.admin.ch) — cover backdates to your arrival
- Open a Swiss bank account — ZKB has the densest branch network in the canton; digital options like neon and Yuh open in minutes from your phone
- Get a SBB Halbtax or GA — Zurich commuters almost always come out ahead with a GA if they ride more than ~3× a week
- If your gross is over CHF 120,000 (single) you'll file a regular tax return even on Quellensteuer — keep Pillar 3a, training and commute receipts
- If you have school-age kids, contact the Kreisschulpflege of your commune as soon as registration is done — placement is by Schulkreis, not parental choice

Taxes, housing and insurance in Zurich
At an indicative gross salary of CHF 100,000 (single, no kids), the combined federal, cantonal and municipal income tax in Zurich works out to roughly 21.8%. Zurich uses a relatively flat municipal multiplier (~119% in the city). High earners benefit less from communes outside the city. Cantonal child deductions and family allowances apply on top of the federal allowance — for an exact figure for your household, use the official cantonal calculator linked above. Your real tax bill depends on the commune (each sets its own Steuerfuss / coefficient), your civil status, Pillar 3a contributions and any BVG buy-ins.
Vacancy in the city of Zurich has been near zero for several years — among the tightest in Switzerland. Expect group viewings with 30–50 other applicants and submit a complete dossier on the spot (Betreibungsauszug, three payslips, employer reference, permit copy, short motivation letter). Gold Coast and Pfannenstiel-side communes run 15–25% above equivalents in Winterthur, Dübendorf, or across the border in AG (Baden, Wettingen).
Adult standard premiums in canton Zurich on the standard franchise are the national mid-range. The city itself is in premium region 1, outer communes fall in region 2 with slightly lower premiums. Children under 18 are billed at roughly a quarter of the adult rate.
