How to get a B permit

REQUIRED

The B permit is the standard residence permit for foreigners staying longer than one year. It is tied to a job, family, or studies.

How to renew your Swiss B permit (2026 guide)

REQUIRED

Your Swiss B residence permit must be renewed before the date on the card. EU/EFTA permits are usually issued for 5 years and renewed for 5; non-EU/EFTA permits are typically issued for 1 year and renewed annually. Cantons run their own migration offices (Migrationsamt / Service de la population / Sezione della popolazione), so the exact form, fee and processing time vary — but the federal framework is the same everywhere. Start 2–3 months before expiry, because a delayed renewal can complicate everything from job changes to mortgage applications.

Upgrade from B permit to C permit

RECOMMENDED

The C permit (Niederlassungsbewilligung / autorisation d'établissement / permesso di domicilio) grants permanent Swiss residence. EU/EFTA citizens usually qualify after 5 uninterrupted years; most non-EU/EFTA nationals wait 10 years, with an early-settlement route for a handful of nationalities and for well-integrated applicants in many cantons.

The Swiss L permit (short-term residence)

REQUIRED

The L permit (Kurzaufenthaltsbewilligung / autorisation de courte durée / permesso di soggiorno di breve durata) is Switzerland's short-term residence permit. It is issued for a specific purpose and contract, usually under 12 months, and is more restrictive than a B: tied to one employer and canton, limited family reunification, and — for non-EU/EFTA nationals — counted against strict federal quotas.

Changing jobs on a B permit

RECOMMENDED

Changing employers on a B permit has different rules for EU/EFTA and non-EU/EFTA citizens. EU/EFTA citizens can switch freely; non-EU/EFTA citizens need their new employer to obtain authorisation before the first day of work.
