Lucerne relocation checklist

LuzernGerman • Updated August 2026

Lucerne is central Switzerland's economic and cultural anchor — a German-speaking canton built around Lake Lucerne and the medieval old town that brings in roughly nine million tourists a year. The economy splits between tourism, financial services (Schwyzer Kantonalbank's Lucerne presence, asset managers), the Hochschule Luzern and a manufacturing belt around Emmenbrücke and Kriens (Schindler is headquartered here). Tax burden is below the Swiss average — not as low as Zug or Schwyz, but comfortably below Zurich.

Taxes, housing and insurance in Lucerne

At an indicative gross salary of CHF 100,000 (single, no kids), the combined federal, cantonal and municipal income tax in Lucerne works out to roughly 20.5%. One of the more competitive central-CH rates. Rural communes (e.g. Meggen) are notably cheaper than the city. Cantonal child deductions and family allowances apply on top of the federal allowance — for an exact figure for your household, use the official cantonal calculator linked above. Your real tax bill depends on the commune (each sets its own Steuerfuss / coefficient), your civil status, Pillar 3a contributions and any BVG buy-ins.

Lucerne's rental market is tighter than Bern and easier than Zurich — vacancy has been comfortable by Swiss standards. A 1-bedroom in the city is broadly in line with the cantonal averages shown above, with 3-bedroom flats scaling proportionally. Meggen and Horw are the tax-efficient lakeside options; Kriens is the affordable, tram-connected alternative.

Adult standard premiums in canton Lucerne on the standard franchise are among the lower in Switzerland. The canton splits into two premium regions, with the city slightly more expensive than the rural communes.
